The structural note: new Camtasia versions are subscription-only, following the Camtasia 2025 release in February 2025; perpetual upgrades stopped after 1 January 2025. Descript has been subscription from the start, with the wrinkle that AI features (voice cloning, studio sound, generated speech) are metered — the sticker price is not the whole cost if you lean on them.
