Descript vs Riverside (2026): Recording Studio or Text Editor?

Vorec Team · 2026-10-22 · About 4 min read

Riverside is built to record remote guests in high quality; Descript is built to edit audio and video by editing a transcript. Both now overlap (Riverside has text-based editing, Descript has recording), but each prices around its core job: Riverside caps separate-track downloads, Descript caps media hours. Facts come from Riverside's pricing page captured 11 October 2026 and Descript's captured 15 October 2026; prices are dollars as displayed, we did not test either tool, and "not checked" means we could not confirm it. Vorec, which publishes this page, makes narrated screen tutorials and is covered briefly at the end.

What each meter means in practice

Riverside does not cap how long you record. What it caps is how many hours of separate participant tracks you download each month. A one-hour interview with you and two guests produces three one-hour tracks, so four such episodes is 12 track-hours: inside Pro's 15.

Descript counts media hours: footage you upload or record into it. Four one-hour mixed episodes is 4 media hours, inside Hobbyist's 10. Importing the three separate tracks of each episode instead would be closer to 12 hours if each track counts in full, which is over Hobbyist and inside Creator's 30; we did not confirm how Descript counts multitrack imports, so test with your own files.

Which to choose

Choose Riverside if recording quality with remote guests is the hard part: separate local tracks, 4K video and 48 kHz audio on Pro, plus streaming (Grow) or hosted webinars (Webinar).

Choose Descript if editing is the hard part: you want to cut a show by deleting words, fix lines with AI Speech, and work with video and audio in one editor, starting at $16 a month on annual billing.

Many teams use both: record in Riverside, then edit in Descript. On annual billing that is $24 + $16 = $40 a month at the entry tiers, which our arithmetic puts at $480 a year.

Where Vorec fits

Neither tool is aimed at software tutorials. If your recordings are screen walkthroughs rather than interviews, Vorec records with its own macOS recorder or takes an uploaded recording, drafts narration matched to each on-screen step, voices it and can generate a written guide from the same capture. Plans: a 7-day trial with 100 credits and no card, then Starter $9, Pro $24 or Business $59 a month. See Vorec vs Descript.
