Descript vs Loom (2026): Video Messages or Text Editing?

Vorec Team · 2026-10-22 · About 5 min read

Loom is built for quick async video messages that a team records and shares; Descript is built for editing audio and video by editing its transcript. Loom charges per user seat; Descript charges per person plus media hours and AI credits. Loom figures come from its pricing page captured 6 October 2026; Descript figures from its pricing page captured 15 October 2026, plus product pages captured 12 October 2026. Prices are the dollar amounts displayed. We did not test either tool, and "Not checked" in this article means our captures do not cover that point. Vorec, which publishes this page, makes narrated screen tutorials and appears briefly near the end.

The real difference: sending a message vs shaping a video

Loom is a communication tool first. Its product page, captured 12 October 2026, advertised screen recording, sharing, collaboration, AI video messages and meeting notes. Editing sits around the message: paid plans trim and stitch, and Business + AI adds transcript editing, summaries, chapters and filler or silence removal.

Descript starts from the opposite end. You record or upload media, it produces a transcript, and deleting a word deletes the matching footage; moving a sentence moves the clip. The trade-off is a monthly media-hour cap.

So ask whether the video is a quick note or a finished piece. A two-minute bug report rarely needs a transcript editor; a published walkthrough usually does.

Worked cost example: a five-person team

Five people send weekly async updates; one also edits polished videos.

Loom only, annual billing: Business is $180 per user a year, so 5 x $180 = $900. Business + AI is 5 x $240 = $1,200. Loom's calculator showed both five-user totals on 6 October 2026.

Descript for everyone, annual billing: Business is $50 per person a month, so 5 x $50 x 12 = $3,000 a year.

Mixed setup: Loom Business for all five ($900) plus one Descript Creator seat for the editor ($24 x 12 = $288) comes to $900 + $288 = $1,188 a year. That is $12 less than Loom Business + AI for all five ($1,200 - $1,188 = $12), and it gives the editor 30 media hours a month in a dedicated editor. If everyone wants AI summaries and chapters on their messages, Business + AI covers that in one bill instead.

Which to choose

Choose Loom if most of your video is internal: status updates, code reviews, design feedback. Business removes the Starter caps for $15 a user a month on annual billing ($180 / 12 = $15).

Choose Descript if you publish what you make: tutorials, podcasts, marketing clips. Editing by text and AI Speech start at $16 a month on annual billing.

Use both if your team talks in Loom and one person produces finished video.

Where Vorec fits

Neither tool is aimed specifically at software tutorials. Vorec records with its own macOS app, or takes a recording you upload, drafts narration matched to each step of the workflow, generates the voiceover and can produce a written step-by-step guide from the same capture. Plans: a 7-day trial with 100 credits and no card, then Starter $9, Pro $24 or Business $59 a month. Compare it directly in Vorec vs Loom.
