Loom vs Snagit (2026): Video Messages or Screen Captures?

Vorec Team · 2026-10-23 · About 5 min read

Loom is for async video messages: you record your screen, then share the result by link. Snagit is a screen capture tool for annotated screenshots, short recordings and step-by-step guides. Loom figures come from its pricing page captured 6 October 2026 and an Atlassian product page captured 12 October 2026. Snagit figures come from TechSmith's store and product pages captured 20 October 2026. Prices are dollars as displayed; Snagit bills yearly. We did not test either product, and "Not checked" means our captures do not cover that point. Vorec, which publishes this page, appears briefly near the end.

The real difference: who watches, and how

A Loom is made to be watched once, soon, by a teammate. Atlassian's product page advertised screen recording, sharing, collaboration, AI video messages and meeting notes. Record a bug walkthrough, paste the link, move on. Editing stays light (trim and stitch on paid plans), and the AI tier adds summaries, chapters and filler or silence removal.

Snagit output is made to be scanned and reused. A screenshot with arrows answers "where is that setting?" faster than a video, and a Step Capture guide can sit in a help centre for months. Snagit does record video, but TechSmith's product page positions finished editing (movement, transitions, animations) in the separate Camtasia Editor.

If the reader needs your voice and reasoning, send a Loom. If they need to follow steps at their own pace, send a Snagit capture.

Worked cost example: a five-person team, annual

Five support staff who send video replies and write how-to articles.

Loom only: Business is 5 x $180 = $900 a year. Business + AI is 5 x $240 = $1,200 a year. Loom's calculator showed both five-user totals on 6 October 2026.

Snagit only: Individual is 5 x $39 = $195 a year; Business is 5 x $48 = $240 a year. TechSmith's pages disagree on where volume discounts start (10+ users on the Business store page, 5+ in product marketing), so ask for a quote at this size rather than assume a discount.

Both, on business licences: $900 + $240 = $1,140 a year, or $1,140 / 5 = $228 per person. Swapping Loom Business for Business + AI makes it $1,200 + $240 = $1,440.

Budget route: Loom Starter at $0 plus Snagit Business at $240 costs $240 a year, if the 25-recording and 5-minute caps per person are enough.

Which to choose

Choose Loom if your team talks through video: code reviews, status updates, customer replies where tone matters. On annual billing Business works out to $180 / 12 = $15 per user a month.

Choose Snagit if you produce documentation: annotated screenshots, scrolling captures, step guides and short clips. At $39 a year it is the cheaper single licence by a wide margin.

Use both if you send messages and also maintain written guides. They overlap most on short screen recordings.

Where Vorec fits

With Loom you narrate live, and generated narration is not established for standalone Snagit. Vorec records with its own macOS app, or takes a recording you upload, drafts narration matched to each step, generates the voiceover and can produce a written step-by-step guide from the same capture. Plans: a free trial with no credit card required (current allowances on the pricing page), then Starter $9, Pro $24 or Business $59 a month.
