Camtasia vs Snagit (2026): Which TechSmith Tool Do You Need?

Vorec Team · 2026-10-22 · About 4 min read

Snagit is TechSmith's screen capture tool for screenshots, quick recordings and step guides; Camtasia is its video editor for producing finished tutorials. Since every Camtasia plan we checked includes Snagit, the real question is whether you need Camtasia's editor at all. Facts come from TechSmith's store and product pages captured 7 October (Camtasia) and 20 October 2026 (Snagit); prices are dollars as displayed and billed yearly, we did not test either tool, and "not checked" means we could not confirm it. Vorec, which publishes this page, is covered at the end.

The bundle detail most comparisons miss

Camtasia Starter costs the same $39 a year as Snagit Individual and includes Snagit plus the Camtasia Editor, but Editor exports carry a watermark on Starter. Watermark-free Camtasia starts at Essentials ($179.88 a year), which also includes Snagit and Audiate. So:

Cost for a team of eight, business licences

Our arithmetic from the displayed per-user prices: Snagit Business is 8 x $48 = $384 a year; Camtasia Business is 8 x $198 = $1,584 a year. TechSmith's pages disagree on where volume discounts begin (10+ users on the Snagit Business store, 5+ in product marketing), so ask for a quote above five seats.

Which to choose

Choose Snagit if most of your documentation is images and short clips: screenshots with arrows, step guides, quick recordings to send a colleague.

Choose Camtasia if you publish edited videos: courses, product tutorials, anything with cuts, zooms, captions and a voice track. You get Snagit included.

Where Vorec fits

Camtasia makes you edit and narrate; Vorec drafts the narration for you. Vorec records with its own macOS recorder or takes an uploaded recording, writes narration matched to each on-screen step, voices it and can generate a written guide from the same capture. Plans: a 7-day trial with 100 credits and no card, then Starter $9, Pro $24 or Business $59 a month. See Snagit alternative for narrated video.

Frequently asked questions

Is Snagit included with Camtasia?

Yes. Every individual Camtasia plan we checked lists Snagit, and Camtasia Business lists Editor plus Snagit.

Do I need both Camtasia and Snagit?

No. Buy Snagit alone for capture; buy Camtasia (Essentials or higher for watermark-free video) and you get Snagit with it.

Is Snagit a video editor?

It records and trims video and combines clips, but editing with movement, transitions and animations happens in the Camtasia Editor.

Is there a free version?

The Camtasia Editor is free to use with watermarked exports; the 14 days TechSmith mentions is a money-back guarantee, not a trial length.
