Screen Recording With Voice on Mac & iPhone: Add a Voiceover (2026)

Vorec Team · 2026-10-21 · About 6 min read

To make a screen recording with voice on Mac or iPhone, or add a voiceover to one you already have, you have three options: turn the microphone on before you record, record narration afterwards in iMovie, or have AI write and voice the narration for you. The first two are free and built into Apple devices. The steps below follow Apple Support pages we checked on 21 October 2026; menu names can differ slightly between system versions.

Method 1: Record your voice while you capture the screen

This is the fastest route when you can talk and click at the same time.

On a Mac (Screenshot toolbar)

  1. Press Shift-Command-5 to open the Screenshot toolbar.
  2. Choose Record Entire Screen or Record Selected Portion.
  3. Click Options and choose a microphone, such as the built-in microphone or a headset.
  4. Click Record. To stop, click the stop button in the menu bar or press Command-Control-Esc.

On a Mac (QuickTime Player)

  1. Open QuickTime Player and choose File > New Screen Recording.
  2. Click the arrow next to the Record button and choose a microphone.
  3. Click to record the whole screen, or drag to select an area and click Start Recording.

On an iPhone or iPad

  1. Add Screen Recording to Control Center if it is not already there.
  2. Open Control Center, then touch and hold the gray Record button.
  3. Tap Microphone to turn it on, then tap the Record button and wait for the countdown.
  4. Stop by tapping the red indicator at the top of the screen. The video is saved in the Photos app.

Tip: a single tap on the Record button starts recording without asking about the microphone. If your recording is silent, the microphone was off; the setting only appears when you touch and hold.

On Windows (Xbox Game Bar)

  1. Open the app or window you want to record.
  2. Press Windows key + Alt + R to start recording with Xbox Game Bar.
  3. Press Windows key + Alt + M to turn the microphone on or off while you record.
  4. Press Windows key + Alt + R again to stop. The MP4 is saved in Videos > Captures.

Snipping Tool on Windows 11 also records the screen (Windows key + Shift + R, select an area, then Start); you can then add narration in a video editor. See how to record your screen on Windows.

Method 2: Add the voiceover afterwards in iMovie

Recording narration separately lets you redo a sentence without re-recording the screen, and avoids "um"s while you are clicking.

iMovie on Mac

  1. Add the screen recording to a new movie project.
  2. Move the playhead to where the narration should start, then click the Record Voiceover button (the microphone) below the viewer.
  3. Optional: click Voiceover Options to choose the input source, adjust the volume, or select Mute Project so the clip's sound does not play while you talk.
  4. Click the red Record button, speak, and click it again (or press Space) to stop. Click Done.

The voiceover appears as its own clip under the video, so you can trim or move it.

iMovie on iPhone or iPad

  1. Open your project and scroll so the playhead sits where narration should begin.
  2. Tap the Add Media button, then Voiceover, and allow microphone access.
  3. Tap Record; recording starts after a 3-second countdown. Tap Stop.
  4. Choose Accept to keep it, Retake to try again, or Review to listen first.

Method 3: Generate the voiceover with AI

If you do not want to use your own voice, or you need narration in several languages, you can skip the microphone entirely. Text-to-speech tools read a script you write; a re-narration tool such as Vorec also writes the script by watching what happens on screen.

With Vorec you upload the screen recording (or record with the Vorec macOS recorder), Vorec drafts narration matched to each step, you edit the text, and it voices it with an AI voice and lines it up with the on-screen actions. It can also produce a written step-by-step guide from the same recording. Plans: a 7-day trial with 100 credits and no card (up to 3 projects, watermarked exports), then Starter $9, Pro $24 or Business $59 a month.
