Scribe vs Snagit (2026): Step Guides or Capture App?
Vorec Team · 2026-10-23 · About 5 min read
Scribe records clicks in your browser (or on the desktop with Pro) and turns them into step guides you share as a link or embed, priced per seat with a free Basic plan. Snagit is a desktop capture app for annotated screenshots, short screen recordings and Step Capture guides, priced per user per year. Scribe facts come from vendor pages captured 15 October 2026; Snagit facts from TechSmith pages captured 20 October 2026. Prices are USD as displayed. We did not test either product, and "not checked" marks anything the captures do not confirm. Vorec publishes this page and appears near the end.

The real difference: a shared web guide or a file on your machine
A Scribe guide is a living web page: capture a process, edit the steps, then share a link or embed it in a wiki. Readers can also open Movies view, a walkthrough with motion, voice and visual cues. Document export is a Pro feature, and the Basic matrix shows no unlimited guide creation, so confirm the free cap first.
Snagit starts from the opposite end. Everything lands in a desktop app first: a marked-up screenshot, a scrolling capture, a short recording or a Step Capture guide. You save PNG, PDF or MP4 files, or use Screencast, where the store lists 25 hosted videos. Teams that paste images into tickets, slides and emails will value that local-first flow.
What five people pay over a year
Our arithmetic, from the captured list prices on annual billing:
- Scribe Pro Team: 5 seats x $23 x 12 months = $1,380 a year. On monthly billing: 5 x $29 x 12 = $1,740.
- Snagit Individual: 5 users x $39 = $195 a year, with one named, non-transferable licence each.
- Snagit Business: 5 users x $48 = $240 a year, with transferable licences.
Scribe Pro Team costs $1,380 - $240 = $1,140 more a year than five Snagit Business licences. Two caveats: Scribe says a team cannot mix Basic and Pro members, and TechSmith's Business store mentions volume discounts from 10 users while its product marketing says 5. Ask before assuming either.
Which should you pick?
Pick Scribe when guides are the deliverable: onboarding steps and internal how-tos people open from a link and you update in place. Basic lets you test browser capture for free.
Pick Snagit when capture is the deliverable: annotated screenshots, scrolling captures and short recordings with audio, with Step Capture for the occasional guide. It is also cheaper per person at the captured list prices.
Where Vorec fits
Neither tool's captured pages establish narration that writes itself. Vorec records with its own macOS recorder, or takes a recording you upload, drafts a voiceover script matched to each on-screen step and voices it, and the same capture can produce a written guide with annotatable screenshots. Vorec offers a free trial with no credit card required (current allowances on the pricing page), up to 3 projects and watermarked exports; paid plans are Starter $9, Pro $24 and Business $59 a month.
Frequently asked questions
Can Snagit make step-by-step guides like Scribe?
Yes. TechSmith describes Step Capture as turning clicks into screenshots with instructions and then a guide; Scribe builds its whole product around that flow.
Is Snagit cheaper than Scribe?
At list prices for five people on annual billing, yes: $240 a year for Snagit Business against $1,380 for Scribe Pro Team.
Does Scribe have a free plan?
Yes. Basic is free with web capture and sharing; desktop capture and document export need Pro. No numeric Basic guide limit appears in the capture.
Can either tool narrate a video for me?
Not checked for Scribe beyond Movies view. For standalone Snagit, generated narration was not established; TechSmith discusses AI voiceover as a suite product.
