HeyGen Alternatives for Avatars and Tutorials (2026)
Vorec Team · 2026-10-20 · About 7 min read
The right HeyGen alternative depends on why you're leaving. If you want a cheaper or more generous avatar tool, the comparison is between avatar platforms: Synthesia, Colossyan and D-ID. If the video you actually need shows software, such as a product walkthrough, an onboarding flow or a support how-to, then the avatar is optional. What matters is the screen recording and the narration over it.
This guide covers both. The pricing figures come from each vendor's pricing page, read in a browser and taken twice per billing state. Where we calculated something, such as a yearly total, we show the arithmetic.
Verified 20 October 2026 for HeyGen, Synthesia and Colossyan from the rendered HeyGen, Synthesia and Colossyan pricing pages. D-ID figures are from our capture of the D-ID Studio pricing page on 19 October 2026. Prices are shown with a $ sign. Except where noted, the pages don't name the currency, and we didn't check tax at checkout.

These are entry points, not like-for-like plans. HeyGen and Synthesia meter usage in credits, Colossyan in "NEO" minutes and D-ID in minutes, and the pages don't support converting between them. The sections below show what each entry plan includes.
What yearly billing works out to
Our arithmetic, from the monthly and per-month yearly prices shown:
| Plan | Monthly × 12 | Yearly | Saving |
|---|---|---|---|
| HeyGen Creator | $29 × 12 = $348 | $288 (shown) | $60, about 17% |
| Synthesia Starter | $29 × 12 = $348 | $18 × 12 = $216 (calculated, not shown) | $132, about 38% |
| Colossyan Professional | $89 × 12 = $1,068 | $59 × 12 = $708 (calculated, not shown) | $360, about 34% |
| D-ID Lite | $5.9 × 12 = $70.80 | $56 (shown) | $14.80, about 21% |
HeyGen, the baseline
HeyGen's Free plan allows 3 videos a month, each up to 1 minute, with one custom video avatar and 30+ languages. Its feature table marks watermark removal as unavailable on Free. Creator costs $29 a month or $24 a month billed yearly ($288). It includes 600 credits, 1080p export and videos up to 30 minutes.
HeyGen's feature table also lists a screen recorder on its Free, Creator and Pro plans. So "HeyGen can't record a screen" is not a reason to switch. For our full breakdown, see HeyGen pricing.
Synthesia
Synthesia's Basic plan is $0. Its card says 500 credits a month, and its feature table says 10 video minutes a month. It includes 9 stock avatars and 1 editor. Its videos carry a watermark and are shared by link. Synthesia's page warns that usage varies, so we don't convert credits into minutes. Starter is $29 a month or $18 a month billed yearly, with 1,250 credits a month (15,000 a year) on top of the free allowance. Downloadable content and logo removal are paid features. More detail: Synthesia pricing.
Colossyan
Colossyan currently shows its Starter plan as Free, with $27 struck through. The page doesn't say whether the free price is permanent. Starter's feature table lists 20 NEO minutes a month, 10 interactive videos a month, 15 translations a month and videos up to 20 minutes.
Professional is $89 a month, or $59 a month billed yearly for one editor, with each additional member shown at $30 a month on yearly billing. It includes unlimited MP4 downloads, watermark removal, 30 NEO minutes plus 10 NEO2 minutes a month, and videos up to 30 minutes on monthly billing or 50 minutes on yearly billing. We haven't verified Starter's export, resolution and watermark cells, so we don't describe them.
D-ID
From our 19 October capture: D-ID Studio's Trial is $0 for 14 days, with 3 minutes in total, a full-screen watermark and a personal-use licence. Lite costs $5.9 a month or $56 billed yearly and is also personal-use with a D-ID watermark. The first plan with a commercial licence is Pro, at $29 a month or $191 billed yearly. D-ID's API is priced in a separate table. See D-ID pricing.
When the video is really a screen tutorial
This section is our analysis.
Avatar platforms are built around a presenter: you write a script, pick an avatar and generate someone speaking it. That suits announcements, explainers and presenter-led courses. Many teams look for a HeyGen alternative because their real output is something else: a walkthrough of their own product. Here the screen carries the information, and the presenter is optional.
For that job, compare tools on different questions:
| Question | Why it matters for screen tutorials |
|---|---|
| What is the input? | A recording of the workflow, or a script you write separately |
| Where does the narration come from? | Drafted from what happened on screen, or typed by you |
| Can the viewer follow the cursor? | Cursor smoothing and zoom make clicks readable |
| Can the narration keep up? | Long explanations need the video to wait |
| Is there a written version? | Help centres and SOPs need text steps as well as video |
We didn't test how HeyGen's screen recorder feeds into its narration, so we make no claim either way. Run your own workflow through any tool you shortlist.
Where Vorec fits
Vorec records your screen, with its own macOS recorder or from a recording you upload. It drafts narration matched to the workflow it captured and generates the voiceover, so nothing is spoken into a microphone and no avatar is required. In the editor you can add smooth cursor motion, cursor-follow zoom and click-based auto-zoom, and freeze-sync can hold a frame to give an explanation time to finish. The same capture can also produce a written step-by-step guide with annotatable screenshots, and narration regenerates in supported languages on eligible plans without re-recording.
An AI agent can drive the recording too. Vorec's `record-tutorial` skill lets Claude Code or Codex plan a walkthrough and drive the recorder through the CLI on your Mac, and you review the take before anything is uploaded. See the Claude Code screen recording plugin.
Vorec's plans, read from our live plan catalogue on 20 October 2026: Trial $0 for 7 days with 100 credits in total and watermarked 1080p exports; Starter $9 a month or $86 a year; Pro $24 or $230; Business $59 or $566. Monthly credits are 500, 1,500 and 5,000 for the first 3 months, then 150, 500 and 1,500. Trial includes up to 3 projects; exports carry a watermark. Details are on the Vorec pricing page.
Vorec focuses on narrated screen tutorials and written guides. If you need a presenter on camera, an avatar platform is the right category, and the comparison above is the place to start.
FAQ
What is the best HeyGen alternative?
It depends on the video. For avatar videos, compare Synthesia, Colossyan and D-ID on their entry plans and free allowances above. For software tutorials and product walkthroughs, look at a screen-recording tool that drafts narration from the workflow, such as Vorec.
Is there a free HeyGen alternative?
Several have a $0 option. On the dates we checked, Synthesia Basic was $0, with watermarked videos shared by link, Colossyan showed Starter as Free, and D-ID offered a 14-day Trial with 3 minutes in total. Vorec has a 7-day trial with 100 credits and watermarked exports.
Is Synthesia cheaper than HeyGen?
On monthly billing, the entry plans are both $29. On yearly billing, Synthesia Starter is $18 a month and HeyGen Creator is $24 a month ($288 billed yearly). They meter usage in different credit systems, so compare them on the videos you actually make.
Does HeyGen have a screen recorder?
Yes. HeyGen's pricing page lists a screen recorder on its Free, Creator and Pro plans as of 20 October 2026.
Can I make software tutorials without an avatar?
Yes. A screen-recording tool captures the workflow itself, and AI narration can be drafted from it and voiced without a microphone. The viewer watches the product instead of a presenter.
Want the recording to narrate itself? Record with Vorec, or upload one you already have, and get a narrated tutorial plus a written guide. Start free. 7-day trial, 100 credits, no credit card required. Trial includes up to 3 projects; exports carry a watermark.
