How to Screen Record in Canva (2026): Steps, Limits, Fixes

Vorec Team · 2026-10-26 · About 7 min read

To screen record in Canva, open the Canva desktop app (Mac or Windows), go to File > New Screen Recording, choose your screen and recording preferences, and select Start recording. Select Finish when you're done; the recording saves to your Canva account as a video you can download as an MP4. Screen Recorder doesn't work in a web browser or on mobile, and each recording is capped at 25 minutes and 1GB. If you want to record yourself talking over slides instead, use Present and record, which works in Canva on a computer.

Every Canva detail below comes from three Canva Help Center pages read on 26 October 2026: Record your screen, Record and delete talking presentations, and Record voiceover in the editor. We did not test the features ourselves. Vorec, which publishes this page, comes up once near the end.

Which Canva recorder do you need?

Canva has three different recording tools, and they do different jobs.

You want toUseWhere it works
Record your whole screen (a tutorial, demo or walkthrough)Screen RecorderCanva desktop app only (Mac or Windows)
Record yourself presenting your slides, with a share linkPresent and record (Talking Presentations)Canva on a computer
Add a voiceover while your design playsRecord VoiceoverVideo designs in the editor

If you're recording another app or a website, you need Screen Recorder. If you're presenting a Canva deck, Present and record is quicker because it walks through your slides for you.

How to screen record in Canva (desktop app)

Before you start, Canva lists three requirements: the Canva desktop app for Mac or Windows, screen recording permission turned on for that app in your computer's settings, and a working microphone with a stable internet connection.

Canva gives four ways to open Screen Recorder. Use whichever is closest:

  1. From the home screen: go to Create, select For you, then under Quick actions select Screen Recorder.
  2. From the File menu: with the app open, go to File and select New Screen Recording.
  3. From the system tray or menu bar: with the app open, go to the system bar (Mac or Windows) and select New recording….
  4. From inside a design: in the editor, open the Uploads tab, select Record Yourself, then Desktop screen recorder. This option only appears in supported design types.

Then:

  1. Choose which screen to record and your recording preferences.
  2. Select Start recording. A countdown runs first.
  3. While recording, a small panel lets you Pause or Delete the take.
  4. Select Finish when you're done.

The recording is saved and uploaded automatically as a Canva video. From there you can download it as an MP4, share it with the Share button, or drop it into another Canva design.

How to record yourself presenting in Canva

Present and record is the option for talking over your slides. Canva calls the result a talking presentation.

  1. Open your presentation and select Present on the editor menu bar, then choose Present and record from the dropdown. If you don't see it, select Share first.
  2. Select Present and record, then Next.
  3. Select Go to recording studio and allow Canva to use your microphone and camera.
  4. If you have more than one camera or mic, pick the ones you want.
  5. Select Start recording and present as you would to an audience.
  6. Select End recording in the top corner and wait for the upload.
  7. Choose Copy link, Download, Discard, or Save and exit.

Two details are easy to miss. Canva supports only one recording per design. And a Public view link is created automatically when you record, even if you don't save the recording, so delete that link if the deck isn't meant to be shared. Deleting the link doesn't delete a saved recording.

Viewers of the shared link can turn on automatic subtitles with the Show subtitles button. Canva says talking presentations can't yet be shared straight to YouTube or social media, embedded into another Canva design as a video, or exported when they're long; download and re-upload, or share the link instead. Canva also notes that Talking Presentations are temporarily unavailable in India.

How to add a voiceover in Canva

To narrate a video design rather than record a screen:

  1. Open a blank design in the video timeline, go to Audio, and select Record Voiceover.
  2. Record while the design plays. The audio lands on your design and in your Uploads folder.
  3. If you need it in another design, copy and paste the voiceover across.

If the playback runs too fast to speak over, select the video and change Speed (anywhere from 0.25x to 2x), or lengthen the scene with Duration. Voiceover recording isn't available in Docs, Sheets, Whiteboards or Websites; Canva suggests resizing the design into a format with a timeline.

Why isn't Canva recording my screen?

Work through these in order:

  1. You're in a browser. Screen Recorder only exists in the Canva desktop app. In Chrome, Safari or Edge, you won't see it.
  2. You're on a phone or tablet. Screen Recorder isn't supported on mobile.
  3. Screen recording permission is off. Canva requires screen recording permission for the app in your computer's privacy settings.
  4. The mic isn't working or isn't allowed. Canva lists a working microphone as a requirement; for Present and record, allow microphone and camera access when Canva asks.
  5. Your internet dropped. Canva lists a stable connection as a requirement, because the recording uploads to your account.
  6. The take ran past 25 minutes or 1GB. Split long sessions into shorter recordings.
  7. You can't find Record Voiceover. Your design type (Doc, Sheet, Whiteboard or Website) doesn't support audio. Resize it to a video or presentation format.
  8. Present and record is missing. Check Share, and note it's temporarily unavailable in India.

When a dedicated screen recorder is the better fit

Canva's recorder is built for getting a clip into a Canva design quickly. If you need captures longer than 25 minutes, a recorder that works in the browser or on Linux, or detailed editing of a software walkthrough, a dedicated tool fits better. Our roundup of screen recording software compares options, and there are platform guides for Windows and Chromebook.

For software tutorials where the hard part is the narration, you can record with any tool, Canva included, and upload the MP4 to Vorec. Vorec drafts narration matched to each on-screen step and voices it with AI, so you don't need a microphone, and it can generate a written step-by-step guide from the same recording. It doesn't connect to Canva; you upload the file. Vorec starts with a free trial with no credit card required (current allowances on the pricing page), then Starter at $9 a month ($86 a year), Pro at $24 ($230) or Business at $59 ($566). There's more in our guide to adding narration to a screen recording, and Canva's own plans are covered in Canva pricing.
