How to Download a Loom Video as MP4 (2026)

Vorec Team · 2026-10-26 · About 6 min read

To download a Loom video, open it from your Loom library, select the menu above the video and choose Download; Loom saves it as an MP4. Downloads only work on paid plans (Business, Business + AI and Enterprise), and only for certain roles. Starter (free) users cannot download at all. If the video isn't yours and you see no Download option, the owner has to allow downloads, or send you the file.

Every Loom fact here comes from Loom's help centre on support.atlassian.com, captured on 26 October 2026. We did not test downloads on every plan or device. Where a page didn't cover something, we say so.

Who can download a Loom video

Loom's "Download your Loom video" page sets download rights by plan and by role:

PlanWho can download their own videos
Starter (free)Nobody, admins and creators included
Business / Business + AIAdmins and creators
EducationAdmins only
EnterpriseAdmins and members

Two roles never get the download permission on any plan, according to the same page: Creator Lite and Viewer.

You can check your plan and role by selecting your profile image in the top right of Loom. Both are listed in the window that opens.

How to download your own Loom video

  1. Go to your Loom library and open the video.
  2. Select the menu icon above the video.
  3. Choose Download from the dropdown.
  4. The file saves as an MP4.

If you see a "Polishing pixels" message, Loom says it may need a few extra minutes to process the file before it is ready.

Loom's page notes that to post a video on YouTube, Vimeo, Google Drive or Dropbox, you download it first and then upload it to that platform.

Can viewers download a Loom someone shared with them?

Only when the owner allows it. Loom's help page says viewers can download if the creator has a paid role (creator or admin) and has turned on download access in the video's settings. Even then, viewers must be signed in to Loom.

Viewers who are not signed in, or who are on the Starter free plan, cannot download the video, whatever the settings say. Loom's video-settings page (read 26 October 2026) puts it more narrowly: a paid creator can let other viewers on a paid role download.

How an owner turns downloads on

For one video:

  1. Open the video and select Settings (in the Edit tab of the side panel).
  2. Go to the Audience tab.
  3. Toggle Downloads (shown as "Allow downloads" in some views) on.
  4. Ask the viewer to refresh the page.

For every new video by default, open any video's Settings, scroll down and select Set defaults, then enable Downloads in the Audience tab and save. Loom says defaults apply to newly recorded videos only. Older videos keep the settings they had.

Download button missing? What to check

Loom's troubleshooting section names three causes: your plan, your role, or a workspace setting. Work through them in that order.

  1. Plan. Confirm the workspace is on Business, Business + AI or Enterprise. Starter can't download.
  2. Role. On Business plans, only admins and creators can download. If you are a Creator Lite or Viewer, ask a workspace admin to change your role.
  3. The video's settings. If someone else made the video, the owner must turn on Downloads for viewers, as described above.
  4. Workspace policy. Admins can switch off downloads for the whole workspace. Loom's "Disable downloads for your workspace" page says this applies to Atlassian-managed workspaces on Enterprise and Business + AI, and that once it's off, users can't download videos or transcripts. Ask your admin whether it is disabled.
  5. Still stuck after the admin confirms it's on? Loom suggests logging out, clearing your browser cache and logging back in.

If none of that applies to you, ask the owner. They can turn on downloads for you, or download the MP4 themselves and send it. Don't use third-party "Loom downloaders" or browser tricks to work around a disabled download. The owner or admin switched it off on purpose.

Videos you can't download at all

Loom's FAQ lists a few hard limits (read 26 October 2026):

Converting a Loom to MP4

You don't need a converter. Loom downloads are already MP4. Its "Upload or import videos" page also states that all videos downloaded from Loom are in MP4 format.

Two things change on the way out, per Loom's FAQ:

So if you relied on Loom AI to cut your "ums", the MP4 still has them. If you need captions on the file, add them in another tool.

Why does my downloaded Loom look stretched?

Loom's web player shows video at 16:9. The download keeps the aspect ratio you actually recorded in. If you recorded at an unusual ratio, the file may look stretched in other players. Loom's suggestion is to set your screen to a 16:9 resolution before recording.

How to download a Loom video on iPhone

We could not confirm this one. Loom's "Record with Loom for iOS" page (read 26 October 2026) lists recording, sharing, watching, comments and reactions, and camera-roll uploads on paid plans. It does not mention downloading.

We did not test downloading on an iPhone. The route Loom documents is the library download described above, so the dependable option is to download the MP4 on a computer and move it to your phone, for example with AirDrop.

What to do with the MP4

Once you have the file, you can re-upload it to another Loom account (Loom suggests this for consolidating libraries), publish it on YouTube, or edit it.

If the recording is silent, or you'd rather not use your original audio, you can narrate it with Vorec. Upload the MP4 in the browser. It detects the on-screen actions, drafts narration matched to them and voices it with AI, and can also produce a written step-by-step guide. It doesn't import Loom links, so the downloaded file is the starting point. The general workflow is in our guide to adding narration to a screen recording.

Quick answers

How do I download a Loom video?

Open the video from your Loom library, select the menu above the video and choose Download. Loom saves it as an MP4. You need a paid plan and an admin or creator role on Business plans (members can on Enterprise).

Can I download a Loom video without the download button?

Not legitimately. A missing button means your plan, your role, the video's settings or a workspace policy blocks it. Ask the owner to enable downloads or send you the file, or ask your admin about workspace settings.

Can you download Loom videos on the free plan?

No. Loom's help page says Starter (free) users can't download videos, and free-plan viewers can't download videos shared with them either.

How do I convert a Loom to MP4?

There's nothing to convert. Loom downloads are MP4 files. Captions, chapters, CTAs and filler-word removal don't carry over, but trims do.

Why can't I download a Loom meeting recording?

Loom says only the meeting organiser can download meeting recordings.

How much does Loom cost if I need downloads?

Downloads start on Business, which our pricing notes (rechecked 23 October 2026) list at $18 per user a month, or $180 a year. See Loom pricing.
