How to Record a Google Meet Call (2026): Steps & Plans
Vorec Team · 2026-10-26 · About 7 min read
To record a Google Meet call, join the meeting on a computer, click Meeting tools, then Recording, then Start recording, and confirm with Start. The recording is saved to the meeting organizer's Google Drive, in the "Google Meet" folder, and an email with the link goes to the organizer and to whoever started the recording. You need an eligible plan (certain Google Workspace editions, Workspace Individual, or Google One with 2 TB or more of storage), your admin must allow recording, and the meeting host must have permission to record. Facts below come from Google Meet Help and Workspace Admin Help, read 26 October 2026. Vorec, which publishes this page, comes up near the end.
How to record a Google Meet call on a computer
Google's steps for the computer version of Meet:
- In Google Meet, click Start or Join.
- At the bottom right, click Meeting tools, then Recording.
- Optional: to record captions, select a language.
- Click Start recording.
- In the pop-up, click Start, then wait for the recording to begin. Participants get a notification when it starts and when it stops.
- To stop, click Meeting tools, then Recording, then Stop recording, and confirm with Stop recording.
A few rules from the same page:
- Recording stops on its own after 8 hours, and also when everyone leaves the meeting.
- Hosts can record by default. If the host turns on Host controls, participants can't change the recording or transcript status.
- You can't record if you join only to present. Join the video meeting first, start presenting, then record.
- On macOS Sequoia, click Allow when Chrome first asks for screen recording permission.
How to record Google Meet on Android
Google's Meet Help page says you can only record on a computer or an Android device. On Android:
- Open the Meet app and tap Start or Join.
- At the bottom right, tap More, then Tools, then Record.
- Optional: pick a caption language, and choose Include captions, Also start transcribing or Also start Take Notes with Gemini.
- Tap Start, then Start again in the pop-up.
- To stop, under Tools, tap Record, then Stop.
iPhone and iPad: the help page has no iOS steps, and people on mobile are notified of a recording but can't control it. (Google's troubleshooting page still says recording is computer-only, which contradicts the Android steps above.)
Which plans can record Google Meet?
Meet Help lists these as able to record video meetings:
| Plan | Can record? | Note from Google's page |
|---|---|---|
| Business Standard, Business Plus | Yes | Admin must allow recording |
| Enterprise Starter, Enterprise Standard, Enterprise Plus | Yes | Admin must allow recording |
| Essentials, Enterprise Essentials | Yes | Admin must allow recording |
| Education Plus | Yes | Users with a "Staff" license |
| Teaching and Learning Upgrade | Yes | Users with that license |
| Workspace Individual | Yes | Listed as "Workspace Individual Subscriber" |
| Google One | Only 2 TB plans or larger | "Google One subscribers with 2 TB or more storage space" |
| Education Fundamentals, Education Standard | No for their own meetings | Teachers, staff and students can't record meetings they organize |
| Business Starter, free personal Google account | Not on the list | Not listed as able to record |
The admin help page's edition list differs slightly (it names Enterprise Essentials Plus, not Enterprise Starter). We did not capture plan prices, so none are quoted.
Where do Google Meet recordings go?
According to Meet Help, read 26 October 2026:
- The organizer's Google Drive, in a folder named "Google Meet", with a sub-folder for each meeting. Attendees automatically get shortcuts to the files in their Drive.
- Email: a link goes to the meeting organizer and to the person who started the recording.
- Calendar: if the recording starts at the scheduled time, the link is added to the Calendar event, and participants in the organizer's organization get access automatically. Groups don't.
- Older recordings: from July 2026 the old "Meet Recordings" folder is renamed "Legacy Meet Recordings" and moved inside the "Google Meet" folder. Old links keep working.
The organizer is whoever created the Calendar event, or whoever launched the meeting from the Meet homepage or Gmail. If you recorded someone else's meeting, the file lives in their Drive, not yours.
Drive shows "Still processing" until a file is ready; downloading it lets you play it right away. The admin page says recordings are saved for three months by default.
Why is the Record button missing? A checklist
Google's troubleshooting page lists these causes. Work down the list:
- Your plan doesn't include recording. See the table above.
- Your admin turned recording off, for the whole organization or for your group.
- The host lacks permission. "Even if you have the necessary permissions as a participant, you can't record a meeting if the host doesn't have them."
- Host controls are on and the host hasn't let participants record.
- You're outside the host's organization. External participants can't record unless promoted to co-host.
- You're in a breakout room. Breakout rooms don't support recording.
- You're on an unsupported device, such as the iPhone app, or you joined only to present.
- The meeting was created by a device (Meet hardware) or a plugin, not a person.
- Drive is off or full. Both you and your organization need Drive space.
- A recurring meeting's organizer account was disabled. Recreate the meeting with a new code.
Can you record Google Meet without permission?
Not with Meet's own Record button. Recording needs an eligible plan, an admin who allows it, and a host (or co-host) with permission; everyone in the call is notified when it starts and stops. An admin can also require participants to give explicit consent before recording begins. If you need a recording and can't start one, ask the organizer to record or to make you a co-host. Recording people without their knowledge can also be illegal in some places.
For admins: turn on Meet recording
From Workspace Admin Help (requires the Google Meet administrator privilege):
- In the Google Admin console, go to Menu, Apps, Google Workspace, Google Meet.
- Click Meet video settings.
- Optional: select an organizational unit or configuration group to apply it to only some users.
- Click Recording and check Let people record their meetings.
- Optional: uncheck Let users download and copy Meet recordings to block downloads.
- Click Save (or Override for an organizational unit). Changes can take up to 24 hours.
Turning a recorded demo into a tutorial
Meet records the active speaker and whatever is shared: a good meeting record, a slow way to teach a process. If part of the call was a screen-share walkthrough, download the recording, trim that part, and upload it to Vorec in the browser on any operating system. Vorec's AI writes and voices narration synced to the on-screen actions, you adjust zoom, cursor and freeze-sync timing in the editor, and you get a written step-by-step guide from the same recording. Vorec doesn't record Meet calls itself. Plans start with a free trial with no credit card required (current allowances on the pricing page), then Starter at $9 a month. For more on that workflow, read how to add narration to a screen recording or see why some teams replace meetings with narrated video updates.
Quick answers
How do I record a Google meeting? On a computer, click Meeting tools, then Recording, then Start recording, then Start. On Android, tap More, Tools, Record, then Start.
Can I record Google Meet with a free Gmail account? Free personal accounts aren't on Google's list of plans that can record. Google One plans with 2 TB or more storage are.
Why is my Google Meet recording not showing? It may still be processing. Check the email link, the Calendar event, and the organizer's Drive in the "Google Meet" folder (or "Legacy Meet Recordings" for older files). It's in the organizer's Drive, not necessarily yours.
Can I record Google Meet on iPhone? Google's page says recording works only on a computer or Android device.
Can participants record, or only the host? Hosts can by default. Participants in the host's organization can record when Host Management is off and the host has permission; external participants need to be promoted to co-host.
